Confidentiality is the basis of trust development in a partnership between nurse and patient and must be earned through comprehensive professional knowledge and advanced communication strategies.

Trust can only be developed through self-awareness and an understanding of personal strengths and weaknesses.

Self-awareness is a transformative process of self, which encompasses the recognition of ones personality, behaviour, emotions, cognitions, motivations, thought processes and natural inclinations (Park, 2012).

It is important when communicating with patients and other health professionals, as it allows for the identification of strengths and weaknesses as well as opportunities for professional development and personal growth (Jack & Smith, 2007). They understand that their decisions and behaviours have holistic healthcare impacts and therefore evaluate the implications of their actions.

Communication can only be effectively achieved through reflective practice.

This essay will explore the effects of self- awareness on communication and the importance of effective communication in the nursing profession.

Nurse-patient communication is dynamic and context specific depending on age, gender, socioeconomic background, culture, education and the patient’s degree of medical condition.

A variety of verbal and non- verbal modes of communication can be utilised to ensure safe, culturally competent and reliable care.

A profession is defined as a trade or vocation, mainly one that involves some sort of higher education or special training.

Professionalism is a stature that the client must maintain when in the workplace because of the standards he or she is held to.
