American Dream In The Raisin In The Sun Essays-82
The notion of the self-made man who starts with nothing and achieves great wealth through hard work seems innocuous enough, but the idea can become pernicious if it evolves into an idolization of wealth and power. In the beginning, Hansberry shows how Walter envies Charlie Atkins' dry-cleaning business because it grosses 0,000 a year.In the end, Walter Lee loses the money for his business and Beneatha's education, and Lena's new neighbors in an all-white neighborhood are less than welcoming.

Her mother, Lena, supports her and sets aside a third of the insurance money to pay for Beneatha's education.

Her brother, Walter Lee, thinks that she should do things like other women do, like be a nurse or get married.

After Walter Lee squanders her money, she is devastated.

Walter Lee is a chauffeur for a wealthy white family but dreams of owning his own business and tends to jump into schemes to try to short-cut his way into financial success.

Walter is ready to sacrifice the pride of the family to let the racist neighborhood association buy out their house, but he realizes that it's not what is best for his family, his father's memory, or his race.

'And we have decided to move into our house because my father - my father - he earned it for us brick by brick.' When Lena Younger's husband dies and leaves her with a ,000 life insurance check, the Youngers believe that all of their dreams are about to come true.

Despite her fear in light of recent attacks on black families that move into white neighborhoods, Lena summons up her courage and pride and makes the move.

Beneatha wants to be a doctor and is in medical school. I'm not worried about who I'm going to marry yet - if I ever get married.' She changes her mind about lots of things, like which boys she likes, whether she likes guitars or horseback riding, and hairstyles, but wanting to be a doctor is something she has been consistent about since childhood.

The move up North was significant in that she had hopes of a better life for herself.

Although Lena is ahead of her times in some respects, her dreams and aspirations are largely linked to her family's well-being, rather than to her own.
